Six Compete for Scholarship

Written & Photography by Arthia Nixon

In a country seemingly dominated by pageantry in recent months, one school has formed a contest to focus on brains rather than beauty, offering its new queen a shot at a semester of free education at a private institution.

The seven sensational beauties will be showcasing their talents and intelligence on June 19 at the Miss Westminster College Pageant, to be hosted in the school’s auditorium. On hand for the grand event will be performances from several well known acts including Bahamian Idol’s Adrianna Munnings aka Bahama’s very own Obama girl.

“All of the contestants participating in this pageant are honor roll students who are prefects, class monitors, athletes or active club members,” said organizers of the event. “Each of the young ladies have already gone through their photo shoot and while many feel the winner might be the prettiest or the skinniest in other pageants, our judges are looking for who exudes the most confidence for Ms. Photogenic. We are also introducing a Spokesmodel Award which allowed the girls to work with a media professional to make sure they were ready to execute poise, diction and knowledge about their country and the world when prompted in any setting. Both the Spokesmodel and Miss Photogenic will get a six month contract with the chance of being featured in some advertising campaigns and going to auditions. However, our Queen will win a whole lot of prizes including free tuition which is a welcome to many in these economic times. Another unique thing is that we’ve substituted our swimsuit segment with career wear.”

Contestants include 13 year-old Cherice Demeritte, who would like to be an attorney. In addition to focusing on the finding ways to decreasing the crime rate in The Bahamas, Cherice would most like to meet the Minister of Youth Sports and Culture to come up with new after school programmes. 15 year-old Marion Evans has a passion for helping single mothers in The Bahamas with their challenges. With the aspiration of becoming an obstetrician, Marion would most like to meet the Minister of Health to discuss the current state of health in the nation.

Kyra Culmer is a 15 year-old who aspires to be a pediatrician. One politician she’d like to meet is Glenys Hanna-Martin because she admires a woman who stands up to speak her mind on serious matters. Kyra would like to focus of teaching kids to read because she feels literacy is essential in every aspect of life. At 16, Kristina Bastian is focused on eradicating sexual abuse in the country and would love to be a nurse because she has a passion for helping people.

McKeisha Murray is 17 years old and would like to give back to the community by becoming a Defense Force Officer. She would like to meet Glenys Hanna Martin because she admires her passion for aiming to protect the youth. She would like to create more peer programmes at school. Phoebe Scott is a 15 year old who plans to travel to Honduras as a plastic surgeon focused on fixing deformities such as cleft lips because she wants people to feel confident. She’s wishes to highlight ways to combat child abuse and would like to meet the Minister of Education to discuss ways to fix schools and bring up the national grade average.
